Tiddlywinks Nursery School - Oral Health
Tiddlywinks Nursery School is dedicated to promoting positive mental and physical health and wellbeing of our children, their families and our staff members across our nursery settings. Without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels causing tooth decay, gum disease, mouth ulcers, tooth abscesses and general oral health problems. If a child’s mouth is healthy, it is easier to smell, taste, chew, swallow, speak and smile. Poor dental health can result in a weakened immune system, therefore implementing a good healthy routine and health care for all children form part of our values at Tiddlywinks to give all children the very best start. Babies should begin seeing a paediatric dentist when their first teeth come through, this can help prevent baby tooth decay and cavities, promoting healthy teeth from a young age.
Our nursery teachers in each setting have recently undertaken NHS England ‘Oral Health Training for Early Years Practitioners’ so that they can ensure healthy eating policies are in place which supports oral health helping to deliver key oral messages to children and their families attending the nursery setting.
Tiddlywinks Nursery School encourages strong tooth brushing routines within the settings, children are able to learn the understanding of ‘Going to the Dentist’ ensuring that our children have good oral health and when the time comes, that they build a positive relationship with their dentist and hygienist.
Every year Tiddlywinks Nursery School have a visit from the local Dentist who comes in the nursery setting to visit the Pre-school children and discuss dental hygiene, tooth brushing importance both at nursery and at home and demonstrates how to brush our teeth! The children love this event and are encouraged to dress up as Dentists and role play throughout the session.
Parent Packs are available in our nursery reception that contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, a brushing diary and top tips for tooth brushing at home.
